Palace of Spanish

Palace of Spanish

The palace was built starting from 1738 by the will of the Marquis of Poppano, Nicola Moscati, unifying two earlier buildings obtained grace to his wife's dowry. The project is traditionally attributed to the architect Ferdinando Sanfelice. Unfortunately the garden that stretched the back of the building is lost. The building is characteristic for the original staircase called at "hawk's wing".

The interior and exterior were richly adorned with a decorative rococo plaster, built by Aniello Prezioso with the design of Francesco Attanasio in 1742. Access doors to the apartments are surmounted by a plaster sovraporta (overdoor), with central medallions with busts. At the end of the eighteenth century the building was undergone to a renovation that expanded the structure by adding another floor.

Early nineteenth century the family was forced to sell the apartments on the first and second floor. The new owner Thomas Atienza, called "the Spanish" from which the naming of the building, commissioned the frescoes in the rooms, now almost entirely lost.
