The event Waiting for Monuments in May, whose first edition was in 2004, aims to involve every city area and anticipates Monuments in May, the event from which it inherited its goals and spirit. It was born, indeed, as a means, for the City Administration, to involve the central as well as suburban city areas in the restyling and restoration of churches, monuments and archaeological sites by organizing special events.
Since Mrch 2006 this event has been named Festivals in the City and dedicated to the rediscovery and evaluation of the history and traditions of Naples. The aim is to draw citizens' and tourists' attention to numerous monumental and archaeological sites as well as areas that are less known but whose history, art and culture are attractive nonetheless. Festivals in the City is a very important event, from an historical point of view, considering it is the last cultural event to involve all the city Areas that, later on, have become Municipalities.
All city districts participate in Waiting for May, by organizing guided tours, musical events, theatrical performances, entertainment activities and sport events, in collaboration with Associations presenting projects strictly related to the themes chosen for Monuments in May.
