The Public Garden (Villa Comunale) of Naples

Information and Services

The Villa covers an area of 110,000 square meters, its extension goes from Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza Vittoria. The main entrance is in Piazza Vittoria, and other entrances are on the sides ofthe Garden. Its construction can be dated back to 1780, at the behest of KingFerdinand IV of Bourbon, who, inspired by the "Tuileries" in Paris, wanted for himself and for the Neapolitan nobility a promenade and a meetingpoint. Inside the Villa there are several buildings, as the Circolo della Stampa, the Zoological Station Anton Dohrn, where there is the oldest aquariumin Europe. With the unification of Italy in 1861, the Villa became "National" and a place where the commemorative functions of those who characterized the history of Naples took place. On this occasion, the entire population was allowed to visit the Villa. Monuments and botanical varieties enrich the Garden.

Villa Comunale: A Brief History

The area from Monte Echia to Posillipo, was already know as "Chiaja" during the 17th cenury. "Chiaja" derives from Latin and its meaning is "beach". Luis de la Cerda, duke of Medinacoeli, had already understood that the area, that today correspons to Riviera di Chiaia, had a strong commitment to a walking area. For this reason, the street was paved, fountains and benches were built and trees were planted. These improvements did not have long life since they were not represented inthe paintings or in the engravings of the early 18th century. In 1778, King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon commisioned to Carlo Vanvitelli the Villa Reale. Vanvitelli's garden extended from Piazza Vittoria to Cassa Annonica and, following the French model, itinvolved, tree-lined parallel boulevards, embellished with fountains and groups of statues of mythological subjects. It was enclosed on three sides with a highiron fence, alternating brick pillars.
