For more than 42 years the San Giovanni Maggiore Basilica remained closed and its importance was forgotten. The monument, thanks to the Jubilee for the City of Naples organized by the Cardinal Crescenzio Sepeand the custody of the Basilica which was given to the Ordine Ingegneri ofNaples Organization, goes back to its artistic splendor. The engineers considered the Jubilee as the occasion to restore the dignity to a part of the city that lives within a degraded art that should be retrained and enhanced through the citizens as well. The restored San Giovanni Maggiore Basilica, whose musical direction was entrusted to Luigi Grima, is trying to become the new beating heart of the historic center of Naples, where the cultural and social events will have as their protagonists the residents and the tourists as well. The Basilca intends to become a leading subject of the future of the city, an intermediary with the institutions, and instrument that designs new strategies in order to develop its territory.
The Basilica will be open from Monday to Friday from10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., on Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 a.m. , on Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 a.m.
