Luigi Maria Pignatiello was born on 16 February 1925 and took orders when he was only 22. Until 1952 he taught philosophy in the seminary and was then made director of the diocesan catechistic office; for many years he was a teacher of pastoral Theology in the theological Faculty of "San Tommaso" of which he became Dean.
He held many high offices, among which the diocesan and regional Delegate of the ACEC (Association of catholic cinema owners) and the Vice-President and National President of the association, Vicar-Apostolic of Naples for the Arenella area and Vomero, and from 1979 to 1986 director of the diocesan weekly "La Nuova Stagione" (The New Season).
After a perod of some years as a missionary in Bolivia, he became interested in the social phenomenon of human mobility and emigration.
His collaboration with the institutions of the city were intense and he took a very active part in the work of the Youth Commission of the Commune of Naples. He died in a road accident on 11 January 1998. His commemorative tablet can be seen on the third floor of Palazzo San Giacomo in a room named after Monsignor Pignatiello.
