Dressed with coloured livery, in past years they were prepared and discreet figures who carried out their role in the residence of rich and powerful men. Passed the time of crinolines and wigs, passed the Napoleonic cyclone and abandoned the following Restoration, the title of assistant underwent, what we could call, a professional reconversion: it started to identify bailiffs, "junior employees" in civic administration, that, on the occasion of festivities and in formal uniform, represented the honour escort of municipal gonfalon or carried out auxiliary functions during official manifestations or important events sponsored by the Municipality
At the town council the function of assistant was carried out until the end of the '50 of the last century with the trust of delicate functions of representation and support for bailiffs that worked at the cabinet office or the general secretary.
Besides being the honour escort of municipal gonfalon ( assignment that today is carried out by the agents of municipal police) assistant were supposed to constitute the honour retinue of "golden medals' pennon", the banner that in some ceremonies followed the city standard. The pennon, today still kept in San Giacomo Building, is decorated with the most important military valour recognitions confered by the State to Neapolitan citizens, protagonists of heroic deeds during war events which marked the last century.
The shape was inspired to the pattern of full military uniforms in use during the half of the nineteenth century and in some particulars it has the same colors of the town coat of arms: gold and red.
The tunic, in black cloth and without shoulder pad, was single-breasted with golden buttons with the heraldic shield of the city. The collar, in red cloth, had a golden embroidery, a color also used for other two embroidery which trim the cuffs.
The trousers, of the same cloth and color of the tunic, had a red band on the one hand. The shoes were in black glossy leather.
White gloves. Black glossy leather belt with a golden buckle on which there is the town coat of arms and two pendants to which was hooked a dresssword. The ceremony arm takes up the gala's uniform pattern for high officials. The cover is in black leather, metal point and chapes are in golden metal.
