The bowels of Naples

In 1856, after a journey in Italy the Dutch writer J.J.L. Ten Kate wrote: [Neapolitan] is a mixture of Greek, Roman, Gothic, Lombard, Saracen, Norman, French, Spanish blood and even more. Naples is often described as a sponge that has absorbed for centuries the different cultures of his conqueror in architecture, language, cuisine, usages and traditions. Starting from the sociopolitical situation in the Netherlands and from the continuous challenge in the multicultural society, the project "The Bowels of Naples" wants to find out how really the romantic image of the melting pot exists in Naples, involving a group of artists, all residents in Rotterdam, among them the writer Mohammed Benzakour ( Morocco, 1972), the director Parisa Yousef Doust ( Iran, 1973) and visual artists Rossella Biscotti (Italy, 1978), Libia Castro ( Spain, 1971) & Olafur Olafsson (Islands, 1973), Ronald Cornelissen (Netherlands, 1960), Ben Laloua/Didier Pascal (founded 2001), Wendelien van Oldenborgh (Netherlands, 1962) and Katarina Zdjelar (Serbia, 1979).

All the artists will be hosted for at least a week in the old town centre of Naples and will have the chance to get to know the city. This stay could become the beginning of a residence for the next year and have as result the creation of new works. The project, which will last 4 months, will include a series of conferences, in collaboration with PAN where, on Wednesday the 5th of November at 18,00, will be shown the short film " The story of a flying carpet in Zwolle" (2004) by Parisa Yousef Doust. In her works Parisa Yousef Doust shows aspects of different cultures that blend, in a fluid way, creating a new identity. The topic of emigration and its tragic consequences, such as alienation and the lack of family relationships, plays a fundamental role in her work.
